An Essential Component

Water is an essential component to all life. In humans, 2/3 of the weight of our bodies and 75-90% of each of our cells is comprised of water. The unique properties of H20 are necessary for a variety of chemical processes including photosynthesis and metabolism. Dr. Wolfgang Ludwig said “All life processes are directly or indirectly connected with water, therefore it entitles water to have a very high priority in the environmental situation.” While water covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface, less than 3% of this is fresh water.

  1. It is very surprising how little fresh water is on this planet. It sounds to me like we ought to start looking into efficient and cost effective desalination processes.

  2. I didn't realize how much water was in our body, that must account for a large portion of our weight.

    1. I am the owner of a water desalination company that makes desalination without the dependence of electricity. If you are curious, contact me at 21brunettin@oursma.org

  5. Since there is so much salt water in the world, we need to find a cost effective way to purify it so we can drink it.

  6. On your pie chart it says 2.5% is freshwater, but only 0.01% is available. Why isn't the other 2.4% available to us?

  7. I'm wondering the same thing Katrina is. Is this fresh water not accessible to us because it's a habitat to different species, or simply because we just can't get access to it?

  8. I agree with Rob and Ryan. With the technology these days people should be able to find out how to get fresh water from the ocean. Also, maybe people can find out how to collect more of the rain water when it rains?

  9. Mills rain water has acid in it so first we need to find out how to take the acid out. But i do agree with you three we need to create a way to take freshwater from the ocean

  10. I'm also curious as to why we can't use the other percentage of fresh water. Rance is right there should be a way to get fresh water from the ocean. I also find it interesting that there is not more fresh water on Earth.
